Are you considering the idea that a South Carolina vacation would do you a world of good? You'd be absolutely right because South Carolina is not just one of the original American Colonies with a rich history and culture shaped by European, African and Caribbean influences. It's not just sunny beaches, crystal lakes, historic towns, and scenic mountains. It's not just a "place," it is an all-out adventure.
Nearly four million visitors a year consider the Charleston area as their destination of choice, which is no surprise after taking into account its reputation for outstanding accommodations, entertainment, and cuisine. Charleston is located near the middle of South Carolina's coast. It was originally called Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England, and its nickname is "The Holy City."
The Historic Downtown District has throughout Charleston's history, been the cultural capital of the South and is thought by many to be a living museum. In this preserved city of beauty, you can experience tours through historic landmarks, including 18th century homes and plantations, the Battery, museums, churches and the city market. The number of historic sites in Charleston, South Carolina is overwhelming. Charleston also boasts numerous art galleries that display the city's impressive appreciation for the visual arts.
One of the most significant destinations to visit within Charleston is Fort Sumter National Monument. Construction of Fort Sumter began in 1829, and was completed on December 26, 1860, when under cover of darkness, Major Robert Anderson moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter. April 12, 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter when Union troops refused to surrender. No one was killed in the 34-hour battle, but it marked the beginning of a war. Fort Sumter then became a symbol of Southern resistance.
Mt. Pleasant is another beautiful place to visit. At the heart of Mt. Pleasant is the "old village" which is designated a National Register Historical District with gracious homes from the colonial and antebellum periods. Mt. Pleasant is home to one of the world's largest naval and maritime museum complexes, Patriot's Point, which is dominated by the World War II famous aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown. Visitors may also board tour boats to visit the National Monument, Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began. Mt. Pleasant hosts several popular annual festivals. So, expect many exciting days when visiting Mt. Pleasant.
Don't forget the beaches of sparkling splendor! The mild climate in the Charleston area is generally conducive to swimming from April through October. All public and private beaches are family-oriented, with a choice of water sports, sunbathing, shelling, fishing, or quiet moonlight strolling.
